Dark & Lovely - 2015

Punch, shea butter and a glimpse inside the Tumbleweave – join Selina Thompson in a celebration of afro hair

Eclipse Theatre Company presents:
Dark & Lovely

at the Crucible Theatre Studio:

Wednesday 18th - Friday 20th November

Selina Thompson has been exploring black hair: its politics, its connotations, its history and what it tells us about being Black, British and Female in the UK today. Dark & Lovely is a performance from inside the Tumbleweave; a home for hair built from abandoned weaves and extensions. Using recorded conversation, music and written text Selina set out to transform the Tumbleweave, which is admittedly a little bit gross, into something beautiful and to reveal just what our hair does, and more importantly, doesn’t tell us, about what it is to be Black.

During this interactive work, Selina directly addresses the audience throughout the show, in a playful (and occasionally cheeky) tone – but whilst very funny at points, it also discusses charged and difficult issues such as race, identity and beauty politics.

Originally performed in a disused barbers shop in Chapeltown, Leeds – Dark & Lovely is set to be a night filled with fun, laughter and coconut oil.

Selina Thompson is an artist and performer based in Leeds. She has made work for pubs, cafes, hairdressers, toilets, and sometimes even galleries and theatres’ including The National Theatre Studio, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Warwick Arts Centre.
