Alongside a consortium of 11 organisations, we deliver a programme supporting over 1,200 black artists in the North of England; generating long-term career sustainability for Black artists by increasing access to local, national and international networks and opportunities.

Slate supports Black* theatre makers in the North by offering training, development, commissions, residencies, retreats, production space, and through the development of six ‘Enablers’ (Black Arts Professionals) who support artists to generate long term career sustainability in the independent sector.

The programme has successfully opened access to new networks for Black artists including national and international speaking opportunities and supports the use of existing networks to promote the project to a wider base. It has maximised the reach of the programme by working with independents rooted in their own locations ensuring artist feedback and influence is immediate, keeping the movement relevant and responsive.

To date, the programme has delivered two group residential workshops and has begun to support to a growing network of artists with resources, opportunities and commissions. With a primary focus on supporting the research and development of exciting and ambitious ideas, Slate is now delivering a development strand.
