Four exciting queer, Black artists from across the North showcase extracts from new projects. Join us for an evening of outstanding work from performers you need to know more about.

Bethany Hermitt is a poet and visual artist from Manchester. She was a member of the critically acclaimed spoken word collectives Young Identity and Inna Voice.

Jamal Gerald will present an extract from new show Dogmatic. Jamal’s work is conversational, socially conscious, a celebration of individuality and focuses on identity and lived experiences. Mostly making the type of work that he wants to see. Trying to make sure that each piece he creates is a different form to the one he made before.

Jamal has made work for poetry slams, films, parties, cafes and theatres. In 2016, he nationally toured his first solo show FADoubleGOT. He was also a co-deviser and performer for the critically acclaimed Putting Words in Your Mouth. Jamal's work has also been shown at SPILL Festival of Performance, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Battersea Arts Centre and the Barbican.

Abena Taylor-Smith is a freelance writer-director. Her work has been published in award winning magazines such as gal-dem, Black Ballad and Diva. She likes to explore themes of blackness, queerness and womanhood in her writing. Ladies Day is her first short film. It was made in conjunction with Creative England, the National Youth Theatre and Sky Arts as part of the ShortFLIX mini-series.

Amma spends the day getting braids in an Afro-Caribbean salon. It’s full of fun, sheen spray, gossip and laughter, but how will she deal with the casual homophobia?

Ladies of Midnight Blue are an Afro-Latin percussion & brass duet comprised of Hannabiell Sanders (Bass Trombone, African & Latin Percussion, Mbira) and Yilis del Carmen Suriel (African & Latin Percussion, Mbira). They create a powerful and upbeat fusion which reaches deeply into trance drum rhythms producing a melodic sound that inspires dancing and audience participation.
