Dorcas Sebuyange | ‘Research and Develop’ Slate Commission

"I applied as an opportunity to not only push myself as an artist and get my idea off the ground but to also inspire my peers and those that identify with me by taking this all on. The message of the final sharing is mostly important to me, getting those listening and watching to think about the state of the world we are living in today and wanting to make a change from having that knowledge."

Dorcas Sebuyange is a Congolese multi-disciplinary artist based in Liverpool. She has recently finished touring the successful national tour of Eclipse’s Black Men Walking and toured in I Told My Mum I Was Going On An RE Trip with 20 Stories High, a play which was then televised on the BBC 2 Performance Live platform. Between these two plays, she performed at San Francisco’s poetry festival Brave New Voices with the international project Next Generation Speaks where she also performed in Rotterdam and Belgium.

Vice Versa
Commissioned by Eclipse, Unity and HOME as part of Slate: Black. Arts. World.

Dorcas has chosen to present her political piece as a visual representation of her own musical collection. As an emphasis on the realms of consciousness she is due to explore: Reality, Dreams and Spirituality.

Vice Versa will be created using a range of different art forms including animations and motion graphics, filmography, poetry, visual art and movement. The final piece will be presented as an immersive experience for audiences.

Recent development work has included the launch of #MicWorthy which saw young people from Liverpool come together to discuss problems within society. The group are now getting ready to document their responses at a recording session. Next stage plans will see visual content and the physical aspect of the piece being explored.

Key dates:
Sharing on Fri 7 Sept at Unity, Liverpool
