Joe Williams & Desiree Reynolds on Creativity and Positive Heritage Engagement: sharing and building our stories using storytelling, presence and prose
Wed 10 Jun, 8 - 9.30pm
Online session - Zoom link to be sent after booking (see below for more info)

A friendly conversation and check in for Black artists, and fellow artists who are also marginalised for their race.

This an opportunity to share and connect with Artist Ella Mesma and Enabler Melanie Abrahams from the Slate World UK team alongside guests Joe Williams and Désirée Reynolds.

This session focuses on Creativity and African-British and Black British Heritages.  We will explore various perspectives including the art and craft of writing and speaking, trauma, solitariness, therapy, and how we can use heritage, writing and speech to engage with, and to address, our past and our personal landscapes.

Joe Williams is a Leeds born heritage activist of African descent, via the Caribbean. He created the Leeds Black History Walk in 2009 and founded Heritage Corner in 2014, to disseminate history of the African diaspora that connects to Yorkshire - through arts, education and public engagement. Joe’s ambition is to promote ancient Nile Valley Civilisations and explore the complexities entwined in a shared heritage, covering many continents, centuries and cultures - that have contributed to Britain’s identity.

Désirée Reynolds is a writer, editor, activist and creative writing workshop facilitator, living in Sheffield. She writes film scripts, short stories, poetry and flash fiction and her stories are in online and in print anthologies. “Seduce” her first novel was published by Peepal Tree Press to much acclaim. Her fiction is concerned with Black women, internal landscape’s, and a continuous struggle against the white, male gaze, notions of self, beauty, race and being. Désirée has been on numerous panels about literature and film, her two greatest loves, and she continues to work as a writer, journalist, teacher and broadcaster. She is a trustee of The Racial Justice Network. You can find her on twitter @desreereynolds and Instagram @desiree_reynoldsu2.
