Kickin' it with the Kinks - 2105, Sheffield film screening

KICKIN’ IT WITH THE KINKS is a self-funded film that started as Cynthia’s university project. After receiving a prize for best documentary in her department, Cynthia and her good friend Mundia, Blackgirlflow co-owner, decided to produce a longer version to raise awareness about the complexities of haircare among women and especially among women of African descent.

Whilst many have opted to be part of the growing trend of ‘going natural’ other continue to go through great lengths to achieve unnaturally long flowy hair. The documentary revists the history of afro-textured hair, explores the norms that have been derived from this very history and unveils the dangers of chemical products. Mundia documents the reality of how much time, effort and money women dedicate to their hair and also meets with specialists who are able to give insightful points into the history of afro textured hair and the ever booming hair product and hair extension industries. Hair is clearly much more than just hair and it stretches out to issues of identity and social interaction, these are also subjects that KICKIN’ IT WITH THE KINKS seeks to bring to the table.

Following this film screening hosted by Eclipse Theatre and Selina Thompson at the Crucible Theatre's Adelphi Room, there will be a panel discussion followed by a Q&A session with Selina Thompson and the filmaker Mundia Stumbeko.

Zambian-born Mundia Situmbeko is a graduate in Development Studies/Economics from SOAS and University of Manchester.
