Naomi Sumner Chan | SAME SAME DIFFERENT - Slate Commission 2019

Naomi Sumner Chan | ‘MAKE’ Slate Commission

"I was surprised and thrilled to find out that I was going to be working with Eclipse on the next stage of work for SAME SAME DIFFERENT. This work is extremely close to me - I was born in Hong Kong but adopted into a white-British family - and I had always wanted to create a piece as told by the kids in these situations. The commission and invaluable support that comes with it will allow me to develop the show and craft it into a story that I hope to be ready to share publicly in 2019."

Naomi is a Manchester based playwright, dramaturg and theatre maker.

She established Brush Stroke Order which provides workshops and mentoring to those who write for performance. Her work has been performed at Manchester 24:7 Theatre Festival, Oldham Coliseum, Theatre 503 and Arcola Theatre. Having completed the BBC Northern Voices writers course, she is currently writing her first TV drama script.

She also took part in The National Theatre’s Step Change Programme and is currently one of the ADLP “Leaders of Tomorrow”, a professional development programme for BAME cultural leaders.

Written by Naomi Sumner-Chan

SAME SAME DIFFERENT is a new verbatim play by Naomi Sumner Chan, exploring adoption, identity and belonging; sharing stories gathered from adoptees around the world.

Inspired by Naomi’s own experiences as a Trans-racial adoptee, adopted from Hong Kong into a White British family, the play reveals what it’s like to grow up in a family and community who don’t look like you. Adoptees of all ages are given the opportunity to share their stories in their own words, reflecting on what they perceive to be the similarities and differences between themselves and their family members.

The play asks: does nature or nurture most influence a person’s identity? What makes you, you?
